Mary Ellen Pleasant

Mary Ellen Pleasant: From Slavery to Fortune – America's First Self-Made Female Multimillionaire by Andy Lammers tells the extraordinary true story of a woman who defied the limitations of her time to become one of the wealthiest and most influential figures in 19th-century America.

Born into slavery on a Georgia plantation in the early 1800s, Mary Ellen Pleasant escaped a life of bondage and reinvented herself on her own terms. Her journey eventually led her west during the California Gold Rush, where she harnessed her intelligence, courage, and sharp instincts to build a vast fortune—estimated at nearly a billion dollars in today’s money.

Pleasant became a formidable entrepreneur, owning numerous businesses across San Francisco, while quietly using her wealth to support abolitionist causes, aid escaped slaves, and uplift the poor. She was both admired and controversial, a woman of vision who operated in a world dominated by men, wealth, and prejudice.

At the end of her remarkable life, Pleasant gave away her fortune to the poor of San Francisco, ensuring her legacy was not only one of wealth but of generosity, courage, and social impact.

This is the story of a woman who transformed from enslaved child to America’s first self-made female multimillionaire—a hidden figure in history whose life reads like both a triumph and a legend.
