Belloc's essays talk as if the West were still a quarrel worth having: property, the state, the Church, literature as a culture's test, decay he thinks he can date. Catholic polemic with a walker and a historian inside it — clarity, joke, a blow. A sequence of positions across years, one temperament: tradition as a working tool, modernity as a thinning of the real, man and the state as a running argument.
