آواره و سایه‌اش نخستین بار در سال ۱۸۷۹ به صورت پیوست و مکمل کتاب "انسانی، زیاده انسانی" و بعدها به صورت مستقل منتشر شد. این کتاب در پایان دوره‌ٔ نخست تفکر نیچه و پس از زایش تراژدی و تأملات نابه‌هنگام نوشته شد. آواره و سایه‌اش دربردارنده‌ٔ گزین‌گویه‌هایی است با ساختاری مبتکرانه و منحصر به فرد. اثر با گفت‌و‌گوی تأمل‌برانگیز «سایه» با «آواره» که شاید کنایه از دو پاره‌ٔ وجود آدمی باشند، آغاز می‌شود. سایه که تاکنون خاموش بوده اکنون از خاموشی آواره در شگفت شده و می‌خواهد به او مجال سخن گفتن بدهد. آنگاه در ۳۵۰ پاره‌ٔ کتاب، نیچه از رمانتیسم، اخلاق، نثر، ادبیات، موسیقی، طبیعت و غیره سخن می‌گوید، تا در پایان باز به این پرسش برسد که «تو کجایی؟ کجایی تو؟»
