Þungamiðja bókar Nahúms er fall Níníveborgar, höfuðborgar Assýringa, hinna fornu fjenda Ísraelsmanna. Nahúm sér fall Níníve árið 612 f.Kr. sem dóm Guðs yfir grimmri og hrokafullri þjóð.
Nahúm lætur hins vegar ógert að koma við kaunin á samlöndum sínum. Óumdeilt er meðal ritskýrenda að Nahúm sé einn mesti stílsnillingur meðal ritspámannanna allra. Um guðfræðilegt vægi bókar hans eru skoðanir hins vegar mjög skiptar. Mörgum þykir takmörkuð guðfræðileg dýpt í að hlakka jafn drýgindalega yfir föllnum fjandmanni og Nahúm gerir. Aðrir sjá guðfræðilegt gildi bókarinnar felast í tákni Assýríu sem ríkis ágangs, grimmdar og heimsvaldastefnu.
