An ALA Notable Book, this powerful debut by playwright Calvin A. Ramsey "touches on a little-known moment in American history with elegance, compassion and humanity" (Kirkus Reviews). Set in the 1950s, Ruth and the Green Book follows a young girl as she and her family set out from Chicago on a road trip to Alabama. But Ruth soon learns that the open road isn't open to all. Encountering numerous "whites only" businesses that refuse them service, Ruth and her parents are left with few options for places to eat and sleep-until they come across the "Green Book," a guide to establishments friendly to African Americans. ". a compelling addition to U.S. history offerings."-Booklist
