Awesome novel, reader??? not so much
I fell in love with this series a long time ago. I bought the first 3 of the books, read by a very good reader. He was South African, and knew how to pronounce Afrikaans well. Although this is an English translation of the novel, there is a goodly amount of Afrikaans that the translator chose to maintain in the novel. This is a great thing, but this reader simply does not know how to read Afrikaans. I am an American who speaks Afrikaans, and I'm not a narrator by any means, but even I could have pulled off the pronunciation better than he did. For example, a few times the characters would say "week jy?" (do you know?) It's supposed to be pronounced "viet" (as in vietnam) "yay" (as in yay!), but he said "weet je?" It really detracts from the authenticity of the book. Unfortunately, the other reader stopped reading the books for some reason so now I'm down to this reader, and honestly wish they would change readers. Unfortunately it doesn't look like they will.
