Herman Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener” is a classic American short story, a strange tale of an assiduous law-copyist whose passive mantra, “I would prefer not to,” has fascinated readers since its publication in 1853. Included here are two other stories from The Piazza Tales: “The Lightning-Rod Man” and “The Bell Tower.”
