“Fans of hefty adventure epics will enjoy this dense, intricately plotted historical fantasy debut...Cameron, a pseudonymous author of historical fiction, packs this thick volume with enough magic, violence, and intrigue for three books, flavoring the story with period detail and earthy dialogue.”

Publishers Weekly

Miles Cameron weaves an epic tale of magic and mercenaries, war and depravity, politics and intrigue in this action-packed debut fantasy The Red Knight.

Twenty eight florins a month is a huge price to pay, for a man to stand between you and the Wild.

Twenty eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men — or worse, a company of mercenaries — against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder.

It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

The Red Knight has all three, he has youth on his side, and he's determined to turn a profit. So when he hires his company out to protect an Abbess and her nunnery, it's just another job. The abby is rich, the nuns are pretty and the monster preying on them is nothing he can't deal with.

Only it's not just a job. It's going to be a war…

If you're a fan of Mark Lawrence, John Gwynne, or Brian McClellan you won't want to miss out on this intricate, epic debut fantasy.

    Not For Me

To be fair, I did not complete this book as it failed to capture my interest. For all I know, it may well be a great book as many reviewers have indicated. But the story didn't flow well. And my experience with books that do not flow well is that it makes for long, cumbersome read, one that frequently loses my interest. I think it is best that I have moved on. My only regret is that I brought the second book along with the first, anticipating a great read, based on the reviews. It is a mistake I will not allow to happen again.

    Needed a little work

This has all the makings. Lots of plot, fantastic characters, high magic... It falls over on two major technical points. First, the religion is a blasfemously flagrant rip off of roman catholocism with some astrological and ancestor worship tossed in for good measure. Not good. A new religion with new forces and ways of interacting with the world shouldn't be too much to ask. Second, the structure needs work. I would have been in favour of throwing out the chapter breaks altogether. The chapters are enormous and the breaks contribute nothing to the story. Then there are changes of viewpoint which absolutely do enhance the story, particularly in battle, where each attack and repost is described briefly from the position of two dueling combatants. Unfortunately, towards the end, the viewpoints change on the fly without a signpost letting the reader know that this is what is happening. Because some of the viewpoints are mere glimpses into one person's aspect of events, important details can be missed if the listener isn't paying attention. If not for the religious angle, I would be very happy rereading this several times. There is definitely enough going on to make a second or third listen well worth while. I decided not to go on with the series right away, but maybe I will come back to it.
