“A good, swift, violent story.”

Dashiell Hammett

An amoral young tramp. A beautiful, sullen woman with an inconvenient husband. A problem that has only one, grisly solution — a solution that only creates other problems that no one can ever solve.

First published in 1934 and banned in Boston for its explosive mixture of violence and eroticism, The Postman Always Rings Twice is a classic of the roman noir. It established James M. Cain as a major novelist with an unsparing vision of America's bleak underside, and was acknowledged by Albert Camus as the model for The Stranger.

Performed by Stanley Tucci

    Noir at its finest!

This was a really fun listen. In fact, I think I enjoyed it more as an audiobook than I would have as a regular book thanks to Stanley Tucci’s outstanding narration. Noir just lends itself to audio. This story is dark, gritty, and complex and full of characters you can’t believe you are rooting for. Or are you rooting for them? Sometimes it’s hard to tell. Do you want two people plotting a murder to succeed and live happily ever after? Yes you do. Will they? Well, if you haven’t seen the movie or read the book, get the audiobook. If you HAVE seen the movie or read the book … get the audiobook. Seriously, you won’t regret it. All the plotting, scheming, murder, betrayal, suspicion, romantic trysts, and mistrust make for a story you won’t forget, and Stanley Tucci makes the experience even more memorable. It’s a definite winner.
