A story that challenges the conundrum of good and bad.
Here is truly a testimony to the idea that no person is all bad or all good. The protagonist of this finely written story is Jack McNulty, an unpredictable scoundrel and saint, a passionate family man, and a fraud that steals money from his wife’s purse to pay off gambling debts and bar tabs, and defuses bombs during his military years. Yet, with all the dichotomies in his life, once one finds a way to crawl through the barbed wire and sewage of his life, one is left with an epiphany: he’s basically like most every other person one meets, were such persons capable of revealing themselves honestly. A rousing, but often disturbing book, the narration by Gerard Doyle does indeed help keep us balanced and wanting to know more.
