Hit Men & The Queen of the Night takes listeners inside Detroit during one of the most explosive periods in American music history.
Set primarily in the years following the 1967 Detroit riots, this historical fiction audiobook—based on true stories, real places and the people who helped shape an era—follows two young people searching for a way out of the factory floor and into the rapidly changing world of rock & roll.
Fred Meyers is a teenage drummer who discovers another way into the music business: becoming a record promotion man. Frankie Vale has an even bigger obstacle in front of her. She wants to break into the male-dominated world of FM radio and become Detroit's first female rock & roll DJ.
Their journeys unfold against the radio stations, record stores, clubs and personalities that made Detroit a musical powerhouse.
Listeners are transported to the Grande Ballroom, underground FM radio, Motown, CKLW "The Big 8" and the emerging record business, encountering Alice Cooper, Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, Bob Seger and more.
Written by former Warner Bros. and Virgin Records executive Fred Meyers, Hit Men & The Queen of the Night blends historical events with fictional storytelling to capture a time when Detroit was loud, rebellious, creative and changing American music forever.
It's a story about ambition, friendship, radio, records and young people who believed rock & roll might just be their ticket out.
Factories by day. Rock & roll by night.
