What if the American school system does not challenge conformity—but teaches it?

In School & College Life, educator and critic Clarence Britten takes a satirical look at American education in the early twentieth century, asking why a nation so passionately devoted to schooling produces such remarkable cultural uniformity.

Through the imagined observations of a visitor from Mars, Britten follows students from childhood through high school and college, examining how education increasingly emphasizes practical advancement, credentials, social acceptance, and preparation for conventional careers. By the time students reach college, intellectual curiosity often competes with a campus hierarchy in which athletics, social life, politics, and academic study occupy very different levels of importance.

Britten turns particular attention to fraternities, school traditions, competitive athletics, campus status, and the pressure to become a "regular fellow." Rather than developing independent minds, he argues, schools too often reproduce the priorities and assumptions of the adult society surrounding them.

Originally published in the influential 1922 anthology Civilization in the United States, School & College Life is a witty and provocative examination of education, conformity, student culture, and the difference between acquiring credentials and cultivating genuine intellectual curiosity.
