Benito Mussolini

Benito Mussolini rose from poverty and political obscurity to become the founder of fascism and dictator of Italy. Through theatrical speeches, organized violence, relentless propaganda, and the calculated destruction of democratic institutions, he created a model of authoritarian government that would help plunge Europe into catastrophe.

Born in 1883, Mussolini began his public life as a socialist journalist and fiery political agitator. His support for Italy's entrance into the First World War broke his relationship with the Socialist Party and accelerated his transformation into an extreme nationalist. In the social and economic chaos that followed the war, he organized the Fascist movement and unleashed squads of Blackshirts against political opponents, labor organizations, and local governments. Following the March on Rome in 1922, King Victor Emmanuel III appointed Mussolini prime minister. Once in power, Mussolini dismantled constitutional government, crushed opposition parties, controlled the press, and constructed an enormous cult around himself as Il Duce-the supposedly infallible leader destined to restore the glory of ancient Rome.

His regime pursued brutal colonial expansion, most notoriously through the invasion of Ethiopia. Mussolini's alliance with Adolf Hitler drew Italy closer to Nazi Germany, led to antisemitic racial laws, and eventually brought the country into the Second World War. Military disaster, economic collapse, and public disillusionment destroyed the image of strength he had spent decades creating.
