An urgent letter sends Hercule Poirot to France. By the time he arrives, his client is already dead.

Millionaire Paul Renauld has been found stabbed in the back and left face down in a shallow grave beside a golf course. His wife claims masked intruders abducted him during the night-but almost immediately, troubling inconsistencies begin to appear.

With Captain Hastings at his side, Poirot enters a case filled with secret relationships, suspicious alibis, hidden identities, and a crime from the past that may hold the key to the present.
