The rain has been at it since lunch when Iris Harland arrives at Elder Cottage, shaking droplets from her umbrella before propping it alongside three others in an old milk churn by the door. She is forty-three, recently free of a hollow career and a failed relationship, arriving with Moss the cat and a cautious appetite for ritual. Little Darlow, she hopes, might be a place where ordinary things - a kettle, buttered toast, a ticking radiator - are enough.

They turn out not to be quite enough alone. Arthur Pritchard, a neighbour of the old-fashioned sort, appears with a returned envelope and a fond memory of marmalade that leads Iris to a guarded Seville recipe. Tom Avery, paint-splattered and quietly competent, mends the leaning fence and becomes, through drilled posts and shared coffee, something harder to name. A recipe tin found in a kitchen drawer - Mrs Halloway's, long since gone - feels like an inheritance quietly offered.

The series follows Iris across her first seasons in Little Darlow: church flower rotas, a power cut that fills the kitchen with camping stoves and neighbours, and the comfortable rhythm of cooperative work. Ian's unhurried narration suits slow evening listening.
