Lafe Brisco had hunted buffalo, tracked killers, and survived country that buried weaker men before sundown. But when he rides into the broken grasslands beyond Red Fork, he finds more than a herd waiting for him.

A ruthless hide boss has been stealing kills, threatening honest hunters, and leaving men dead where the coyotes can find them. Lafe wants no part of another man's war-until a beaten young skinner staggers into his camp with a warning and a bullet wound.

Now Lafe must choose between riding away with his rifle and keeping his peace, or standing against a crew of hard men who believe the prairie belongs to whoever spills the most blood.
