At just seventeen, Sandy Creek has already learned how cruel the world can be. Orphaned young and raised in a home where kindness was scarce and cruelty came daily, Sandy dreams of escape-of a place where she might matter, where she might be safe.

Desperate to flee a life of hardship and loneliness, Sandy answers a newspaper advertisement from Abner Tuttle, an aging hog farmer in Texas seeking a wife. She lies about her age, claiming to be twenty-one, and prays her words are enough to earn her passage west.
