Miss Winchelsea's Heart

Miss Winchelsea takes a cheap Rome tour with Fanny and Helen, Baedeker discreetly covered, and falls for a cultivated young man in the carriage — until a friend calls him Snooks on the steps. Wells's short comedy of refinement turns snobbery into heartbreak in one syllable: she refuses him; Fanny later writes of Senoks, then Sevenoaks, and takes the marriage that should have been hers. Taste as fate; the holiday that taught the wrong lesson.
