They were enemies. She hated him, he couldn't stand her, and that was that. Yeah. Right.

He was the star quarterback, and I was the head cheerleader. To all who saw us, we were the perfect couple and had been since high school.

But there was a darker side to Joey that no one knew. Not even my dad-the chief of police.

They only saw the perfect jock who could do no wrong. Except for Nate-the jerk.

That's how I always thought of Brittany. Until I came across the perfect couple arguing one night on my way home.

I told myself to keep walking, but I'm glad I didn't. Or else I never would have seen the fear in her eyes as Joey put his hands on her. How could I not look out for her after that?

That's all it was. I was looking out for the princess.
