A brilliantly imaginative and poignant fairy tale from the modern master of wonder and terror, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is Neil Gaiman's first new novel for adults since his #1 New York Times bestseller Anansi Boys.

    Strange and Fascinating

This story is really beautifully written with a haunting, other-worldly quality that makes it stay with you long after reading. I’ve seen it classified as a fable, and that really seems to fit. It’s a strange book in a lot of ways and not what I was expecting at all. It very much skews into fantasy and fairytale territory, and has a darkness that’s a bit unsettling, but that only adds to its arresting and absorbing style. I haven’t read anything else from Neil Gaiman, but definitely plan to now. I can’t imagine this not in audio as it was so well done. Neil Gaiman reads it and does a fantastic job. Highly recommend if you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary!

    Love his stories!

What does one say about a Neil Gaiman book? The worlds he creates are always interesting, always unique, always absorbing. Whether writing to an adult audience or a younger audience, he knows how to entertain, how to grab your attention and suck you into a story. And often, his stories can cross age lines, appealing to both young and old. “The Ocean at the End of the Lane” is one such book. Though hailed as an adult novel, the protagonist is a seven year old. Younger readers would certainly be able to jump into this story. I love it when Gaiman reads his own stories. He’s got a great voice for audio, and since he knows his own story intimately, his delivery is spot on. He’s able to do different voices, even if they’re only slightly different, so you can distinguish fairly easily between characters. He had to tackle a lot of female characters in this novel, and he did just fine.

Not quite as awful a reading as Scott Brick

Having an author read his own work is always a questionable act. Gaiman is a superb writer, but he should leave the reading of his books to the pros, excluding Scott Brick. Still, since this is the only version out there, unless you read it out loud yourself, it's worth a listen.
