Black Beauty

Anna Sewell's Black Beauty tells the life story of a beautiful horse who recounts his experiences from a peaceful childhood in the English countryside through years of changing owners, difficult labor, and hardship. Born on a farm and raised with kindness, Black Beauty learns early the importance of patience, trust, and humane treatment.

As he moves from one owner to another, Black Beauty encounters people who care deeply for their animals as well as those who treat horses with cruelty and neglect. His journey introduces readers to the working horses, carriage drivers, stable hands, and families of Victorian England, revealing the dangers animals can face when profit, fashion, or convenience is placed above their welfare.

Despite the hardships he endures, Black Beauty remains gentle and resilient. His story emphasizes compassion, responsibility, kindness, and respect for animals while offering a vivid portrait of nineteenth-century English life. First published in 1877, Black Beauty became a beloved classic and helped inspire greater awareness of animal welfare.
