Paul Anderson is a restless history PhD student facing the prospect of a bland, but safe, academic career. When he uncovers lost correspondence between ancestors of Robert Louis Stevenson and a little-known pirate, he stumbles onto a secret buried for more than three hundred years: Blackbeard's greatest "treasure" was never gold, but a fortune in rare Madeira wine, hidden in haste and lost to time.

Convinced he's on the verge of a career-making discovery, Paul abandons his relationships and the security of his academic path to follow a trail encoded in Treasure Island itself. But he's not the only one. Ailsa MacLeod, a brilliant Scottish archivist, is armed with algorithms, drones, and the backing of a shadowy hedge fund that leverages history for profit.

What begins as a scholarly pursuit becomes a high-stakes race that leads through ancient archives, across storm-lashed coasts, and through the marshlands of the American South. As alliances shift and loyalties blur, Paul must confront a dangerous truth: the past never stays buried, but only some treasures are worth fighting for.
