Many of the city-states of Ancient Greece gave the world a legacy rich in art, literature, poetry, philosophy, and science. But one such state distinguished itself by embracing something very different: a warrior lifestyle, a denial of luxury and wealth, and a focus on the collective rather than the individual. While most other Ancient Greek city-states have been forgotten, the name of that city remains in use in the English language today, meaning austere or rigorous: Spartan.

The notion of Sparta remains alive today, but just what was Sparta, and how did it come to be so well-known in the ancient world? What was it about these people that made them so different from other city-states in Ancient Greece, and why did they become the most feared and successful warriors of the age for almost 700 years? This is an account of the mythic origins of Sparta and its known history until its final demise in the face of the rise of another militaristic empire—Rome.
