It appeared during the pre-Islamic period of Arabic literature (the Jahiliyah period), representing the pinnacle of pre-Islamic Arabic literature and profoundly influencing the development of later poetry. Employing the Qashit poetic form, these poems are characterized by their bold and natural style, reflecting the social landscape of the period of collapse of Arab clan society.

Legend has it that during the Jahiliyah period, a poetry contest was held annually during the month of Abstinence at the al-Uqaz, a market town 100 kilometers east of Mecca. Poets representing various tribes would compete, and the poem that won first place each year was written in gold ink on linen and hung on the wall of the Kaaba in Mecca as a reward; hence the name "Suspended Poems."
