薯粥 / Yam Gruel

Hayato Tokitoki, a mysterious ronin, arrives in the castle town of Okazaki and asks for permission to teach swordsmanship.

But he does not seek wealthy samurai as pupils.

He chooses ordinary ashigaru foot soldiers.

Before sunrise each morning, Hayato gathers them on an open field and trains with them. After practice, his wife Nanae brings out a large pot of warm yam gruel, which the couple serves to everyone without accepting payment.

To support this daily meal, Hayato works as a common laborer while Nanae earns money through sewing.

For Hayato, martial arts are not about fame or technique.

He teaches that a warrior must cultivate an unwavering heart, fulfill daily duties faithfully, and become the best human being possible within his own station.

When challenged by the domain's official sword instructor, Hayato demonstrates overwhelming skill—but refuses a prestigious position.

"Every place in Japan is my dojo. Every person I meet may be a fellow student."

"Yam Gruel" is a warm historical story about teaching, dignity, humility, discipline, and the meaning of true martial character.

承応二年、三河・岡崎城下。

浪人・十時隼人は、足軽たちにだけ武道の稽古をつけたいと願い出る。

稽古は未明から日の出まで。

そして終わると、妻・七重とともに大鍋を運び、門人たちへ熱い薯粥を振る舞った。

教授料は取らない。

粥代をまかなうため、隼人自身は矢作橋の工事場で人足として働き、七重も縫物の賃仕事を続ける。

彼が足軽たちへ教えるのは、剣技だけではなかった。

「百石の侍に出世することより、足軽として誰にも劣らぬ人間になれ」

武道とは、地位を得るための技ではなく、「まことに武士として生きる心」を鍛えるものだという。

やがて藩の正式な師範との御前試合で、その並外れた力量が明らかになる。

しかし隼人は五百石での召抱えを辞退し、再び妻と旅立っていく。

剣、教育、夫婦の支え合い、そして一椀の温かな粥に込められた心を描く、山本周五郎の爽やかな武家人情小説。
