After the death of Lord Asano Nagaharu, two favored retainers face an old samurai ideal: should loyalty end with the death of one's lord?

Shobei Fukuo abandons his marriage plans and devotes himself to guarding his lord's grave through the freezing winter. His determination is praised throughout the domain as equal to committing ritual suicide.

Shume Yashima chooses the opposite path.

Although criticized as cowardly and ambitious, Shume accepts office under the new lord and argues that the shogunate's prohibition of junshi means more than simply forbidding death: a true retainer must remain alive and devote that life to the future of the domain.

The truth is deeper still.

Shobei deliberately chose the life of a grave keeper because he knew Shume possessed greater talent. By acting first, he prevented his proud friend from following him and preserved an indispensable servant for the house.

"Junshi" is a profound historical tale about two forms of loyalty—one expressed through sacrifice, the other through continuing to live and serve.

藩主・浅野長治の死後、深い寵愛を受けていた二人の家臣が、「殉死」という武士の覚悟に直面する。

福尾庄兵衛は縁談を破棄し、厳寒の墓前に座して、亡き主君の墓守りとして一生を捧げる道を選ぶ。

一方、八島主馬は殉死せず、新藩主の側用人となった。その姿は「命惜しさ」「出世欲」と家中から非難される。

だが主馬は言う。

殉死禁止令の本意とは、ただ死ぬなということではない。生き抜いて次の主君と藩家へ奉公せよ、ということなのだ。

そして庄兵衛にも、誰にも明かさない真意があった。

才ある主馬を藩のために生かすため、自分が先に墓守りとなり、彼が後を追えないようにしたのである。

死ぬ忠義と、生きる忠義。

二つの武士道を通して、奉公と自己犠牲の本質を描く山本周五郎の歴史短編。
