This is where it begins. An army doctor, invalided home from Afghanistan with a shattered shoulder and a wound pension that will not stretch to London rents, is told of a man looking to share rooms. He is warned, gently, that the fellow is a little odd. They meet in a chemical laboratory at Bart's. The stranger shakes his hand and says: you have been in Afghanistan, I perceive.

Then Lauriston Gardens. An empty house, no furniture, dust thick on the floor — and in the middle of the room a well-dressed corpse with no wound on it and a look of horror fixed on the face. On the wall, scrawled in blood, a single word in German. Lestrade and Gregson are already there, already certain, already wrong.

The novel then does something no reader expects: it leaves London entirely, crosses to the salt flats of Utah, and tells the other half of the story from the beginning.

The first Sherlock Holmes story ever written, and still the one that explains why he has never gone away. The friendship starts here, at Baker Street, on the first page.

그리고 이 소설은 독자가 예상하지 못한 일을 한다. 런던을 완전히 떠나 유타의 소금 사막으로 건너가, 이야기의 나머지 절반을 처음부터 다시 들려준다.
