A Norfolk squire brings Holmes a scrap of paper covered in stick figures — little men with their arms and legs flung out, chalked along a windowsill by an unknown hand. They look like a child's drawing. His wife took one look at them and went white.

Elsie Cubitt married him a year ago on one condition: that he never ask about her life in America. He agreed and has kept his word. Since the figures began appearing — on the sundial, on the toolhouse door, always overnight, always gone by the time the police could be called — she has been living in silence and terror, and she will not tell him why.

Holmes recognises at once that the figures are a cipher. What he needs is more of them. Each new message arrives from Norfolk by post, and each one takes days, and the messages are getting longer.

This is the story in which Holmes solves the code and arrives too late to use it — a case he afterwards regarded as one of his failures, and one in which the reader can crack the cipher alongside him.

엘시 큐빗은 일 년 전 한 가지 조건을 걸고 그와 결혼했다. 미국에서의 지난 삶에 대해 절대 묻지 않는다는 것. 그는 승낙했고 약속을 지켰다. 그러나 그림이 나타나기 시작한 뒤로, 해시계 위에, 공구창고 문에, 언제나 밤사이에 그려지고 경찰을 부를 무렵이면 이미 사라지고 없는 그 그림들이 이어진 뒤로, 아내는 침묵과 공포 속에 살고 있다. 그리고 이유를 말하지 않는다.

홈즈는 그것이 암호라는 것을 즉시 알아본다. 필요한 것은 더 많은 표본이다. 새 메시지는 노퍽에서 우편으로 온다. 한 통이 도착할 때마다 며칠이 걸리고, 메시지는 점점 길어지고 있다.

홈즈가 암호를 풀어내고도 때를 놓치는 이야기다. 그 자신이 훗날 실패한 사건으로 꼽았고, 독자가 홈즈와 나란히 암호를 풀어볼 수 있는 몇 안 되는 편이기도 하다.
