Holmes goes to Herefordshire anyway. He reads the ground the police have already trampled — footprints, a stone, the mark of a wooden leg — and finds a version of that afternoon in which every fact stands unchanged and the meaning is inverted.

What waits at the end is not an arrest. This is one of the rare cases where Holmes learns the truth and then decides what to do with it — a decision that belongs to no court, and that he makes alone.
