Before dawn, a young samurai dressed for a duel arrives too early at a frozen training field.

Unable to endure the cold, he approaches a small fire beneath a bridge. There he meets an elderly couple known in the castle town as the "beggar husband and wife."

The old man reveals that he was once a samurai of good family. Forty years earlier, driven by jealousy over a woman, he challenged his closest childhood friend and struck him down. He fled the domain with the woman, abandoning his family, status, and future.

The passion for which they sacrificed everything eventually faded. What remained was poverty, wandering, and the memory of the friend who had once followed him silently and said, "Because we are friends."

The old man tells the young samurai that mistakes are part of life—but avoidable mistakes, especially those that cannot be undone, should be prevented.

When dawn arrives, the young man returns to the field. Facing the opponent he had intended to fight, he removes his swords and asks to talk instead.

"Under the Bridge" is a profound story of anger, friendship, regret, and the brief pause that can change an entire life.
