Gorozaemon Kamobe proudly chooses the celebrated Keinosuke Uchida as husband for his only daughter.
Keinosuke is reputed to be a master swordsman and brilliant scholar. Yet after entering the family with only one suit of armor and one spear, he repeatedly disappoints his father-in-law.
He breaks the family's treasured pine tree and tea bowl, appears ordinary at sword practice, and refuses to join scholarly debate.
Convinced that he has been deceived, Gorozaemon complains to his lord.
Only then does he learn that Keinosuke deliberately refuses to turn swordsmanship, scholarship, possessions, or reputation into ends of their own.
For him, every form of training exists for one purpose: complete service as a samurai.
"One Suit of Armor, One Spear" is a thoughtful and humorous tale about humility, duty, material attachment, and the true meaning of martial discipline.
Written by Shugoro Yamamoto.
