After his hot temper ruins his assignment in Edo, samurai Yazawa Shinichirō returns to Okayama.
Known for his quick temper and frequent quarrels, Shinichirō is instructed by his uncle, senior inspector Yazawa Jūbei, to practice patience. Whenever rain depresses him or another person provokes him, he tries to convince himself that everything is pleasant and that even the most irritating man must possess some virtue.
The lesson proves difficult.
Then five convicted prisoners escape from a transport ship bound for the Oki Islands and disappear into the castle town of Okayama.
One night, Shinichirō encounters and captures an escaped prisoner named Denshichi. Once the young heir to a prosperous Osaka rice merchant, Denshichi reveals that he risked everything to avenge his wife, Natsu, whose life was destroyed by a calculating samurai.
The man he seeks is Uryū Konosuke—a talented, handsome official who is also engaged to Shinichirō's beloved cousin, Ogie.
Shinichirō now faces an agonizing conflict. He cannot ignore injustice, yet helping Denshichi could also remove a romantic rival and serve his own hidden desires.
As deception, abduction, loyalty, and vengeance converge, Shinichirō must decide which anger should be restrained—and which anger must finally be unleashed.
Shūgorō Yamamoto's The Wrath of Shinichirō is a compelling historical drama filled with humor, romance, suspense, moral conflict, and deep human compassion.
This is not merely the story of a hot-tempered man learning patience.
It is a story about knowing what deserves our anger—and for whose sake we should act.
