When their father dies, the Dashwood sisters lose almost everything. The estate passes to their half-brother, and what's left for Mrs. Dashwood and her three daughters is a modest cottage, a reduced income, and the uncomfortable reality that their futures depend almost entirely on who they marry.

Elinor feels everything deeply and shows almost none of it. Marianne feels everything deeply and shows all of it.
