Ramakrishna

Ramakrishna was one of the most influential spiritual figures of nineteenth-century India, a mystic whose teachings helped shape the modern understanding of Hindu spirituality both in India and throughout the world. Though he left behind no formal philosophical system of his own, his life, experiences, and conversations inspired a religious movement that continues to attract followers more than a century after his death.

Born Gadadhar Chattopadhyay in rural Bengal in 1836, Ramakrishna became a priest at the famous Dakshineswar Kali Temple near Calcutta.
