"And You Will Become a Neolithic Man" takes the form of a guide. A stranger arrives at a camp of Paleolithic hunter-gatherers - someone familiar with a new phenomenon: the Neolithic. He explains to his astonished audience why the Neolithic is superior to their current way of life, initiating them into the mindset of Neolithic Man and the behaviors and patterns that define this new world. The stranger is an enthusiast, and he works hard to overcome his listeners' natural suspicion by presenting the undeniable advantages this new era has to offer.

This book is a dystopia - though at times a very funny one. As the achievements of the Neolithic are revealed one by one, it becomes clear that survival will require abandoning the Paleolithic instinct for equality, for mutual aid, for sharing food. A division into the "better" and the "worse" will emerge. Hunger - unknown in the Paleolithic - will appear. Phenomena for which there were no words will become normal.

Read from a bird's-eye view, this book may leave a gloomy impression. It is not a warning about something that might happen in the future. It is a description of something that has already happened. The last 12,000 years have forced us - people living today - to change the way we relate to one another. Our tragedy is that 12,000 years is too short a time for evolution: biologically, we are still the same as our Paleolithic ancestors. And yet the Neolithic has nearly eradicated the behaviors that once defined us. We have already been almost fully domesticated. And there is no way back.
