“Campbell Scott brings a refreshing perspective to the spooky story. Understated, yet fully engaged, he changes point of view between Danny and his parents, leading the listener effortlessly. Scott colors the secondary characters with slight shades of regional accents, bringing them to life without overperforming them. His detached, choppy rendering of horrors from the hotel’s past contrasts with his effusive illustration of its present, wringing every drop of terror from both.”

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this tour de force from the undisputed King of Horror, a young family confronts an unspeakable evil in the harsh isolation of winter in the Rocky Mountains.

“An undisputed master of suspense and terror.” —The Washington Post

Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But when the oppressive winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote … and more sinister. As strange and terrible forces gather around the Overlook, the only one to notice is the uniquely gifted five-year-old Danny Torrance—yet the true horror lurking within its walls is beyond human comprehension.

I’m so glad I listened to this!

I feel it’s strange to realize that I’ve seen the movie so many times but never read the book. These days I don’t have time to sit down and pick up an actual book that’s why I appreciate listening to books from Blackstone audio. Getting to know Stephen King more and more as I read through his work. I highly recommend getting this book and listening to it when you can. It’s crazy to realize how different this is from the movie. So much more about the hotel and the backstory of Jack and how he ended up to be bad shit crazy. The narration is wonderful. I highly recommend this book!

    Good But Slightly Disappointing

I first read this a LONG time ago, when I was first discovering King's work. I'm thinking maybe early 80's for a time frame. I remember liking it a lot then. I also remember liking Kubrick's version when I was old enough to watch it. I like to think I saw it before I was 17 but I simply do not remember. I just finished my reread, and I have to admit, I liked it but not like I remember liking it. Simply put, my rating changed from 4 stars to 3. I can't put my finger on exactly why, but I can say I thought there was way too much background info on Jack, and that was distracting. I did, however, love to revisit the history of the hotel, as to me, it is the main character. When I compare it to Kubrick's movie now, I hate to admit that I may actually like it better than King's version, and I am a huge fan of King's body of work. Don't get me wrong. The written version of The Shining is way better than anything I write, but when I compare it to other King books, it was just ok. No more really liking it. Needless to say, I am glad I revisited this book in preparation to read Doctor Sleep. I read an excerpt that changed me from not caring about the sequel to really wanting to read it. I'm hoping it doesn't disappoint.
