The people aboard not only survived, but thrived, as the moon's surface fused on its passage through the atmosphere, and in its weak gravity caught enough atmosphere that the surface becomes a fertile paradise, with crops and evolving plants enough to keep them happy and well-fed. \u003cbr\u003eThis tale directly influenced Arthur C Clarke, who states in \"Extra-Terrestrial Relays\" (1945) that it was the first story to imagine an artificial satellite used for communication and navigation, and is namechecked in Stephen Baxter and Terry Pratchett's Long Earth series, as the name of a space station in The Long War and The Long Mars.
